Computational Biology

It is an interdisciplinary field that allows to describe, manage, and modelling (in silicio) biological Systems, through the techniques of computer science, applied mathematics and statistics.

The focus lies on developing mathematical modeling and computational simulation techniques. By these means it addresses scientific research topics with their theoretical and experimental questions without a laboratory.

In this field, my attention was mainly focused on the implementation of an analyzer for complex data deriving from biologica systems simulations. This tool, developed during my experience at the Microsoft Research Centre of Trento (CoSBi), was named Snazer.

Snazer is designed to aid the processes of visualizing and manipulating reactive models, as well as to share and interpret time-course data produced by stochastic simulators or by any other means. It loads biological networks encoded in SBML as well, and stores graph layouts in standard GraphML files. Moreover, it loads time-course data exported in CSV, compresses and prepares them for remote sharing and statistical processing. Finally, to enhance interoperability, it has been equipped with a public, XML-based, schema to allow other tools both to encapsulate and structure their time-course data and to package their interaction networks (see the CoSBi Web page for Snazer).
